The Middle East Times reported yesterday that the Secretary-General of Interpol, Ronald Noble, is on a tour of Latin America. The international policing organization’s head will visit Panama, Costa Rica and Argentina this week.
Interpol – the International Criminal Police Organization – facilitates “transnational police cooperation” by policing initiatives regionally, nationally and internationally. The organization was formed in 1923 and has National Central Bureaus in countries around the world, as well as their General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon, France. Interpol has membership of 186 international countries.
Noble, due in Panama on Tuesday, is formerly of the United States Treasury and is the first non-European to hold the post. The goal of Noble’s mission is to discuss national and regional policing initiatives with top security authorities. Particularly, Noble was recognizing Panamanian police officers that, through the help of Interpol, were able to capture a Colombian fugitive within 24 hours.

Panamanian Growth Celebrated by Torrijos and Rice
According to a press release issued by the Panamanian government,
Late last week, meetings were held between U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, and Panama President Martin Torrijos in order to discuss common interests between the two countries.
The meeting, entitled the Pathways to Prosperity in the Americas”, or PPA, were held in Panama City. The purpose of the meeting was to promote cooperation and economic growth in the Western Hemisphere through free trade and open investments. The conference hosted ministers of foreign affairs and commerce from Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru and the United States.
Secretary Rice thanked Torrijos for hosting the meeting, stating, “I want to thank you and congratulate you too on the great progress that Panama has made during your presidency. We can see the extraordinary growth here in Panama City. We see the project that will expand the Canal. And I also want to congratulate you on the improvement in social indicators on poverty. I know that this is something that was dear to your hear when you became President, and it is very good that you have delivered so much for the Panamanian people. And again, Panama is an example of what can happen when trade and investment and policies for good governance come together to bring social progress for the people”.
