Chinese in Panama Supportive of Games

It was reported this week that there are over 300,000 people of Chinese origin in Panama that are following the Beijing Olympics, according to Dia a Dia newspaper.

According to the paper, “The Olympic Games have generated full joy in the Chinese community in our country (of Panama)”. The paper also sourced Sergio Lay, who is a member of the Chinese Association of Panama, who stated that “For us, here in Panama, we can even feel the splendor of the Games”.

The Chinese have been an integral part of the Panamanian culture. Through their understanding of cargo transportation and ship-building, the Chinese have helped to build Panama’s international culture. As of 2003, there were over 135,000 Panamanians of Chinese decent – the largest Chinese community in Central America.
