Diversity Still Very Much a Part of Panama Today

This week, the Panama Travels blog posted about the Jewish Community and its growth in Panama City, Panama. Panama, a naturally diverse country due to the initial construction of the Panama Canal, and now – years later – from the expansion efforts of the Canal – has been a hot bed for foreigners since its inception.

The first Jews to Panama came from Spain and Portugal and practiced secretly. Much of this was due to the fact that many came after Nazi invasion in Europe.

Apparently there are over 10,000 Jews now living in Panama City and the outlying areas like Colon. As a result, Panama has ample supply of synagogues, Kosher supermarkets, and Jewish day schools. The Free Zone in Colon is a haven for many of the Jewish developers. The contrast is an interesting one, considering that Panama was colonized by Catholic missionaries.

Panama truly is a diverse and international city. Check out our website to check out our land investment deals. Make your home in Panama! Visit www.panama-land-for-sale.com.

Bigger Expansion in Panama: Good News for Land Development?

It was announced on Monday that the Panama Canal may merit even larger expansion than currently planned.  Andrew Beatty, of Reuters reported that due to the current cargo levels, the ‘waterway’s $5.25 billion expansion may not be enough in the long term’.

The Canals traffic is expected to increase 3% annually over the next three decades.  Absolutely amazing…..

Rodolfo Sabonage – who is the head market analysis of the PCA made statements to the effect that much of the growth is due to Chinese exports heading to areas of the eastern United States..

Currently, expansion efforts are due to occur through the year 2014.  Further expansion and more locks could be in jeopardy due to the United States economy, yet the trade from China is apparently compensating for these factors…

This can only mean great things for our growing area of Panama City….Don’t miss out – check out our land investment opportunities at www.panama-land-for-sale.com.  We have both residential and commercial properties for sale!

Panama City Growth - #1 in Central America

According to citymayors.com, Mercer, an international consulting firm, released a study in which Panama City is rated as # 2 in Latin America for safety and quality of life. It is # 1 in Central America.

“In terms of personal safety, Canadian cities perform best with Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver all ranked jointly at 22. In the US, Chicago, Honolulu, Houston, Lexington, San Francisco and Winston-Salem all share rank 53. Elsewhere in the region, Santo Domingo has the highest ranking at 92 followed by Panama City (96) and Monterrey (99). Bogota (207) in Colombia has the lowest levels of personal safety. The Canadian cities score 115.8 compared to Bogota’s 30.4.” (http://www.citymayors.com/features/quality_survey.html)

Regionally, Panama City is the most thriving and developing area in Central America. Many companies including Caterpillar and Hewlett Packard have moved international offices to the area, and with the Panama Canal’s expansion, the shipping business is also bringing significant growth to the area.

Panama Economic Outlook Positive - Development Expected to Continue

While current President, Martin Torrijos, faces faltering public approval ratings due to rising food and fuel costs, the good news is that the economic activity for Panama was up almost 9.5% for April, which is in stark contrast from the lows we experienced in March.

The government cited new construction new development as well as hospitality as growth-rich industries.

The government also mentioned that March numbers were low, due to the early timing of Easter this year.  Analysts are eagerly awaiting numbers from May in order to get a clearer picture of the current economy, of which those same analysts are optimistic.

On Tuesday, June 24th, 2008, Reuters reported “With 12-month inflation running at 8.8 percent investors are watching how Panama, which uses the dollar as its national currency, can bring higher living costs under control”.

All of this news is beneficial for our selective group that has decided to make Panama our home.  Get the most out of your dollar – contact us today about retiring or living in Panama.  Our land development deals are beautiful and economical.  Visit our website at www.panama-land-for-sale.com.

Panama - Canal Development and Expansion

The Panama Canal Authority released details of last week’s meetings at the Panama Canal Miraflores Locks Visitors’ Center.

Last Wednesday, the AAPA – the American Association of Port Authorities Congress of Latin American Ports – met in Panama City. Attendees were briefed by Panama Canal Authority CEO, Alberto Aleman Zubieta, on the development and tremendous growth that is being experienced due to the Canal expansion.

“It is clear that Panama is emerging as the transportation and logistics hub of the Americas,” said Alemán Zubieta. “Large-scale infrastructural improvements like the Canal expansion and the Pan-American highway, coupled with Panama’s strategic location and proximity to other regional port development projects, make Panama an ideal hub for international commerce.”

Further evidence that we are going to see continued land development as well! Check out our deals at www.panama-land-for-sale.com. See what you can expect when you move to Panama!

Panama Development Owner Wants Land Back

The News Herald published a story today by Jeremey Morrison regarding Bayou Park, located below 11th street in Panama City.

The land owner, Kenneth Brown, had originally deeded the property to Bay County for $1 in 1976. However, Brown is not pleased with the way the park is being used, claiming that it originally was designed as “a natural spot by the water’s edge where the community could gather.” Instead, he describes it has become “an unlawful activity location”.

Brown wants the park closed and the land returned to him, citing that it will “clean up the community”. The city planning commission will have the final say and will also determine the price if the land is to be returned to Brown.

Panama Development Deals Continue

Today in Panama, yet another record deal was made.

According to Reuters, the Disney Magic, a 964-foot long cruise ship, paid $283,400 in order to cross the Panama Canal.  This is in addition to three other container ships that paid over $300,000 each to cross the canal.  The reasons for these prices?  The canal has reserved and non-reserved slots that are scheduled for crossing.  Non-reserved slots are sold at auction to the highest bidder.  The bidders are mostly cruise ships, yachts, or transportation companies that are competing for the space and time.

New Growth Announcements This Week....

This week, a couple of announcements were made that are sure to be beneficial for the country of Panama.

First, next year, there will be a highway opened that connects Colon to Panama City.  This will provide a number of new jobs - most likely in the tourism trade - for locals in Colon.  There are also cruise lines that are signing up to use Colon as a base.

Secondly, Chevron has announced that it plans to double its storage capacity at Las Minas, immediately outside of Colon.  The company has already invested $13 million in order to raise the capacity to over 2 million barrels at the facility, and future growth is anticipated.  The reasoning for the expansion is due to the increasing number of vessels utilizing the Panama Canal.

These growth plans will do nothing but grant continued economic development and security to the area.  Are you thinking about retiring or moving to Panama?  Visit us at www.panama-land-for-sale.com to view our properties for sale and to read more information about living in Panama!

What to Do on the Weekends in Panama

At www.panama-land-for-sale.com, we are often asked by potential buyers what you can do on the weekends.  Aside from the beaches and casinos, our recommendation is to go down to Calle Uruguay.

Calle Uruguay, particularly between Calles 48 and 49, has a multitude of popular clubs and restaurants.  The weekend begins on Thursday evening, and there are a number of happy hours that offer drink specials.  The TGI Fridays is a surprisingly popular spot for the young and single, and the popular clubs don’t get going until late hours and are open until early hours.

Are you thinking of moving to Panama?  Let us know!  Ask us about our current offers and check out our site at www.panama-land-for-sale.com

Panama Canal On Schedule.....

Today, Panamanian President Omar Torrijos announced that the $5.2 billion Panama Canal expansion is on schedule.

The Panama Canal is the connector between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It saves ships from having to go around the southern tip of South America to cross the western oceans. Instead, the ships are able to use the Canal to cut through Central America. Originally opened August 14, 1914, the Canal is slated to re-open 100 years later in 2014.

The 93-year old Canal is the forefront of Panama’s economy. The new expansion will bring new residents, visitors, and jobs. Roughly 12% of Panama’s workforce is being affected by the Canal’s expansion. Panama is currently a desirable location – the country offers a high return on the dollar and significant discounts and excellent benefits for retirees.

Panama's Tremendous Growth Continues....

Bob Bauman's Sovereign Society Blog featured an article yesterday called "Come On Down to Panama". The article highlights several new facts that are indicative of the tremendous growth that continues to occur in Panama. Among the statistics were the following:
  • There were more than 15,491 new companies started in Panama in the past 8 months.
  • There are 250 new skyscrapers under construction in the Panama City area
  • There are building applications for an additional 400 skyscrapers in the Panama area already filed.
Click here to read the entire article.

The article also suggests that some of the most up-and-coming areas exist right outside Panama City. Welcome to the Panama Land for Sale Blog!

In February of 2007 I had the pleasure of traveling to Panama. I found paradise and will likely work the next 20 years and retire down there. During my trip I met a South Floridian that relocated to Panama 14 years ago. Mark Livingway and I hit it off. We started a Web site, Panama Land for Sale, with the intentions of bringing Americans down to Panama for land investment. It is a lot easier to work with other Americans who are well established in Paradise.

This Blog will chronicle my travels there, land opportunities, fishing, and any Panama news that is relevant for the savvy American Investor.

If you are interested in learning more about our current Panama Properties for sale, you can email me at jlaratro@tandem-interactive.com or fill out the contact form on the Web site. If you are more interested in large Panama land development deals, we can service you as well!
