Today, the Clipper Race - a sailboat race around the world that has been around since 1996 – made its way through Panama, beginning Race #10 of the journey.
The race was shortened in its leg from Santa Cruz to Panama, due to displacement while the Canal is undergoing its makeover. Click here for video of the boats entering the canal. Click here for video of the boats exiting. The video features the Gatun and Miraflores locks. The locks allow for the boats to be 26 meters above sea level as they are sailing around the world.
From Colon, Panama, the race will continue to Port Antonio, Jamaica.

Hot Properties TV to air in Panama
Hot Properties TV, a weekly television show highlighting real estate around the globe, will begin airing in Panama on June 24, 2008 at 8am on Panama’s Mall TV (Channel 24).
Hot Properties TV is owned by E! Entertainment and is produced by Hot Pink Ink Media right here in Panama City, Panama! The show will be aired in a number of Latin and Caribbean countries, and will be broadcast in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The show is due to have online access as well, at www.hotpropertiestv.com, although the site is not available yet.
The show’s host, Brianna Meighan, is a well-known beauty of Panama. Originally from North Carolina, Meighan moved to Panama as a FSU college student studying Spanish abroad. Meighan ended up marrying a Panamanian, and has stayed ever since! Check Brianna out when the show airs, or click here for a segment of the show.

New Growth Announcements This Week....
This week, a couple of announcements were made that are sure to be beneficial for the country of Panama.
First, next year, there will be a highway opened that connects Colon to Panama City. This will provide a number of new jobs - most likely in the tourism trade - for locals in Colon. There are also cruise lines that are signing up to use Colon as a base.
Secondly, Chevron has announced that it plans to double its storage capacity at Las Minas, immediately outside of Colon. The company has already invested $13 million in order to raise the capacity to over 2 million barrels at the facility, and future growth is anticipated. The reasoning for the expansion is due to the increasing number of vessels utilizing the Panama Canal.

HMS Bounty Travels Panama Canal
Yesterday, the HMS Bounty traveled through the Panama Canal on a promotional tour. This is the first time that the ship has traveled this route since the 1900s. The ship departed on April 6th from St. Petersburg, FL. It will head to Tahiti from Panama, and will return back to the United States through the Canal on January 9, 2009.
The ship’s history is interesting. It was built in 1784 and purchased by the Royal Navy in 1787. The ship is considered small, but standards at the time, and is a three-masted, full-rigged ship. In 1789, the ship was taken under mutiny in Tahiti. Read about the ship by clicking here.
Most recently the ship has been used in motion pictures. In 2006, the HMS Bounty was used in “Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man’s Chest”. It has also been featured in MGM’s “Mutiny on the Bounty” in 1962.

What to Do on the Weekends in Panama

Calle Uruguay, particularly between Calles 48 and 49, has a multitude of popular clubs and restaurants. The weekend begins on Thursday evening, and there are a number of happy hours that offer drink specials. The TGI Fridays is a surprisingly popular spot for the young and single, and the popular clubs don’t get going until late hours and are open until early hours.

Panama Canal On Schedule.....
Today, Panamanian President Omar Torrijos announced that the $5.2 billion Panama Canal expansion is on schedule.
The Panama Canal is the connector between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It saves ships from having to go around the southern tip of South America to cross the western oceans. Instead, the ships are able to use the Canal to cut through Central America. Originally opened August 14, 1914, the Canal is slated to re-open 100 years later in 2014.
The 93-year old Canal is the forefront of Panama’s economy. The new expansion will bring new residents, visitors, and jobs. Roughly 12% of Panama’s workforce is being affected by the Canal’s expansion. Panama is currently a desirable location – the country offers a high return on the dollar and significant discounts and excellent benefits for retirees.
